Why your vacancies may not appear on job boards

Free job board advertising is changing, and not in your favour.

Jobtrain makes your vacancies and adverts available to a network of job boards via a feed. What happens next is decided by the board. Whether your advert is published, where it ranks in search results and how long it stays visible are all down to that board's own policy, algorithm and sponsorship model.

If a vacancy is not showing up the way it used to, the cause is rarely the feed. It is almost always the board's own rules doing exactly what they were built to do.

What is changing

Job boards built their business on a simple trade. Post for free, get some reach, pay to get more.

That model is under real financial pressure. Venture capital funding into marketplace job boards has fallen sharply since its 2021 peak, and several of the biggest names in the sector are repositioning around the same idea: paid, outcome-accountable results rather than open, duration-based adverts.

  • LinkedIn has been moving this way for some time, rolling job posting into a wider ecosystem of learning, recruiter tools and AI-assisted hiring features rather than treating a job advert as a standalone product.
  • ZipRecruiter has been building community and content products alongside its core listings.
  • Stepstone Group, under private equity ownership, has talked openly about repositioning its portfolio of brands towards AI-driven matching rather than pure listing volume.

The direction of travel is the same everywhere. Employer budget is moving towards platforms that can prove an outcome such as clicks and applies, and organic reach is becoming something you earn access to rather than something you are owed.

The gravy train of free advertising may be approaching the end of the line.

Where Jobtrain sits in this

This is the part we want to be completely straight with you about, because it comes up regularly and the honest answer is not always the one people expect.

What we do

  • Make your vacancies and adverts available for advertising via a feed to a network of job boards.
  • Offer job boosting and paid advertising through our partner integrations and platforms, including Indeed for public sector, education and third sector organisations.
  • Support posting to job boards where you already hold a paid contract.

What the board decides

  • Whether your advert is published at all.
  • Where it appears in search results.
  • How long it stays visible.
  • Whether it is shown for a particular search.

We do not own Indeed's search relevance engine any more than we own LinkedIn's feed algorithm. No applicant tracking system does.

Why this matters more than it used to

A year ago, a job that was correctly fed out would generally appear. Today, correctly fed is the entry requirement, not the guarantee.

What this means for your advertising budget

Two things are worth knowing as you plan the months ahead.

Sponsorship is now the reliable route to visibility. For roles where you need guaranteed prominence, particularly hard-to-fill or time-critical vacancies, paying for placement on the relevant board is increasingly the only dependable option. Free listings still have a place. Treat them as a supplement rather than the whole strategy, and never as a guarantee of applications.

You have options through Jobtrain. We can help with paid advertising, including boosting individual jobs, and with posting to boards you already have contracts with. If you are not sure which route suits a particular vacancy, ask us.

If a vacancy is not appearing

Worth checking first:

  1. The vacancy is live and published in Jobtrain, and the advert is within its advertising dates.
  2. The job board you are expecting to see it on is selected for that vacancy.
  3. The advert content meets that board's requirements. Some boards reject or downrank adverts with missing salary detail, vague locations or wording that breaches their policies.

If all of that is in order and the vacancy still is not showing prominently, the board's ranking and sponsorship rules are the most likely explanation. At that point the practical fix is sponsorship or boosting rather than a change to the feed.

The one thing worth remembering

If your vacancies and adverts are not showing up on job boards the way they used to, the honest answer is rarely about the feed from Jobtrain or from any other ATS. It is about a job board industry that is quietly moving from free and open to paid and managed.

Our role is to make your vacancies available to job boards via supported feeds. Whether they are then published for free sits with the boards and their own policies.
